How can I become a rigger?
For information regarding careers at UK Rigging, visit the careers section of the website which includes how to become a rigger.
What is the difference between training and the NRC?
For people working as / wishing to be riggers there are two separate things and it depends how much and what you have done before as to what you do:
Training
Teaches students what to do. Depending on which course, students are taught how to do what they are doing properly, work safely on the ground and using personal protective equipment at height, how to rig, how to carry out rescue etc. For every course we run, participants receive a certificate of training.
Qualification
The qualification available for riggers in the UK are the PLASA NRC (National Rigging Certificate). This is purely an exam, there is no teaching / training involved. The NRC Level 2 is for the ‘everyday working rigger’. It is a two day exam, candidates sit a written exam and two practical exams where they must be able to work safely and carry out rigging competently. The NRC Level 3 is for the ‘supervisory rigger’. Candidates must already hold the NRC Level 2. They must sit a written exam with more advanced questions, carry out a risk assessment and be examined supervising one of their own rigging jobs.
What time do courses start and finish?
Unless otherwise specified,
Training courses: start at 10:00 and finish at approximately 17:00.
NRC and NELT: arrive at 09:00 for a 09:15 start.
What do I need to bring with me?
Training courses: everything including PPE is provided for you. For rescue training, you may bring your own PPE and any devices you wish to discuss / use during the training. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for climbing.
For the NRC, you need to bring your own PPE. A definitive list is provided by PLASA when you register to take your NRC exam.
Where can I stay whilst at UK Rigging?
A full list of hotels and local guesthouses is provided when you book to do the course. If you require this beforehand, please email [email protected].
What will I receive after my course?
For the training courses, each candidate will receive a certificate of training.
For the PLASA NRC, successful candidates will be qualified and receive a skills card and certificate from PLASA.
Are there any pre course requisites?
All training courses except the rescue course are suitable for anyone to attend. If you have some experience, you will gain more from the courses than if you attend with no previous experience.
For the Rescue Course, candidates should be confident working at height and have a good understanding of PPE for work at height, otherwise they should attend the One Day Work at Height course (or similar) beforehand.
In order to take the PLASA NRC, you must already be competent as this is purely an exam to prove your competence in rigging.
What are the methods of payment?
Payments can be made by Credit/Debit Card, bank transfer, cheque or cash.
After successfully completing a training course, am I now qualified / competent?
Competence is a combination of training, experience and knowledge. Therefore, no training course alone can make someone competent in rigging. Training however is a step towards becoming competent, and once you feel you are competent, you can look at taking your PLASA NRC or NELT qualification as proof of competency.
